Sham 69 on Captain Oi

One of the most commercially successful of all the Punk bands (seven Top 50 hit singles and three Top 30 albums) the original career of Horsham’s favourite sons left a lasting impression on a whole generation of kids, many of whom were moved to go and form bands of their own – The Business, Dropkick Murphys and Argy Bargy are just three bands who’ve covered their songs and it’s unlikely that their would have been an Oi! movement as we know it if it hadn’t been for Sham’s early highly influential releases.

Vocalist Jimmy Pursey was a bloke you could love and hate in the same sentence and he helped nurture the early careers of the likes of Angelic Upstarts, Cockney Rejects and The Chords amongst others. He very much had his finger on the pulse of the street of the late 70’s and it’s a pulse that pulsates to this very day.
